A well-installed lawn can transform a landscape overnight. With the right grass type, proper installation, and a little care, a new sod lawn will elevate and accentuate your landscape and home.

THE INSTALLATION PROCESS

We take extra care in installing our sod correctly. We start by removing any existing lawn. Once down to bare dirt, we evaluate the drainage and soil conditions of the site. If needed, we add topsoil and grade for drainage and shape. Our fine grading process creates a level foundation for the sod that will ensure a smooth surface every time you cut the lawn. We keep our joints between the sod pieces tight, to eliminate gaps and retain moisture. Once installed, we soak and compress the ground with a rolling weight to further smooth the sod and ensure proper contact to the ground. In six weeks, the result is a full lawn you can hardly tell is new!

TYPES OF SOD

In the Charleston area, there are 4 main types of sod we use:

    • St. Augustine – excellent drought tolerance and performs well in full sun to shade. Often called “Charleston Grass”, St. Augustine is one of the best choices for lawn in the Charleston area
    • Centipede – a great low-maintnece lawn for the south. Not as drought, shade, or traffic tolerant as Zoysia and St. Augustine
    • Bermuda – a great grass for full sun and open areas. Bermuda is a fast growing lawn option with great heat and drought tolerance, but poor shade tolerance. Bermudagrass can be quick to spread into landscape beds and difficult to remove.
    • Zoysia – arguably the best grass for a fine southern lawn. Excellent drought and shade tolerance and withstands heavy wear. Vibrant color with a medium-fine texture.

 CARING FOR NEW SOD

The first step of caring for new sod is to have some type of watering system in place. Sod should be irrigated daily, for about a week after installation. As much as needed for saturation. After that, waterings can be slowly reduced as the sod takes root. The final watering schedule will depend greatly on site conditions and will be different for every lawn. Once the sod is well-rooted, it can be mowed for the first time.
